Following Jesus

At St. Georges our motto is: following Jesus Christ 24/7. But what does ‘following Jesus’ really mean and what does it involve?

Love

Jesus told his followers to love one another. For him, love is more than a warm, fuzzy or sentimental feeling – it’s an act of selfless commitment to other people. Love means putting other people’s needs before our own. So one way we can follow Jesus is by putting other people first.

Unselfishness and compassion

Another way in which we can follow Jesus is to follow the example he set during his time on earth. He was unselfish, he gave love to those who could give him nothing in return. So we can follow him by trying to serve those people most in need, especially those who are outcasts from society.

Simplicity and generosity

Jesus lived a life of simplicity, free from materialism and greed – we should try to do the same. Jesus also demonstrated God’s extravagant love for us. In turn, we can try to be generous towards other.

Weakness

Jesus embraced weakness so that God’s plan of salvation and victory over death could be achieved. We shouldn’t fear weakness – it can be a way to let God’s power work through us.

The cross

Jesus told his disciples to carry their cross. We should try to endure any suffering that comes our way with dignity and always be ready to make sacrifices on behalf of others.

Help!

This way of life is impossible in our own human strength. However, God gives us his Holy Spirit to enable us to live this way. The more we open our lives to the Holy Spirit the more we can live like this.
